HighTechies buys and sells computer-related equipment on Craigslist and eBay from time to time, sometimes accepting trade-ins when computers are upgraded, or buying equipment that is priced for repair or resale.
Here is the code of ethics for craigslist sales:
- Never try to manipulate the buyer by quoting the new price of anything. That's not helpful, as the only thing that's important for used items is the used going rate. Prices are based on trying to be slightly under the used going rate, and not asking substantially more than that as some craigslist ads do.
- Identify the meaningful specs, like model number, up front, so the buyer doesn't have to guess.
- Do not conceal any defects in the product. Listings will give the basic fasts and always include information on anything that prevents an item from operating like a new item.
- If there is more interest than expected for an item, still sell to the first committed offer to buy, for the advertised price, rather than unethically jacking up the price.
- Respond to all emails except the mail-order scam emails.
- Do not use the term "flat-screen" to describe a CRT TV or monitor when that characteristic is totally unimportant now. Buyers want to know if it's a CRT (large, bulky, heavy, more power-consuming) or a thin-screen, energy-efficient LCD or plasma.
- Take down the ad or mark it as completed soon after money changes hands.
- Do not use fake prices (e.g. $1) in listings, and always include the true price in the correct field so people can know what it is up front.
Additional rules for eBay:
- Charge honest shipping rates rather than try to evade fees, or to make the price look better by diverting part of the gain into postage or "handling" because listed items have to ship when sold. (And don't slip in an optional extra for insurance.)
- Accept PayPal despite the fees, because many people find it convenient.
- Don't do reserve auctions because of how people feel about them.
- Ship quickly after payment, and if a buyer wants a speed upgrade, it'll be at actual cost, with no markups called "handling."
- Don't put "Not [some other brand or model]" in the title to snag people looking for the other brand when not selling the other brand.
