The unveiling of the new Turing is a significant development that seeks to reinvent computer graphics. According to Jensen Huang, NVIDIA CEO, ray-traced graphics and interactive graphics operated by GPUs provide speed and responsiveness.

These two components now function as a single entity in this significant development since the 2006 invention of the CUDA GPU. Turing is NVIDIA’s eight-generation GPU architecture which brings ray tracing to real-time graphics.

Huang also presented the first Turing-based GPUs which include the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000, Quadro RTX 6000 and Quadro RTX 8000. These components also come with a Quadro RTX server to revolutionize the $250 billion visual industry.

The new turing is a positive step in realism, and it also changes the development of computer graphics. The system vendors that will support the latest line of Quadro processors include Fujitsu, Dell EMC, Hp, Lenovo, Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Boxx and SuperMicro. The three new Quadro GPUs will also be soon available.

New Software, New Silicon

The new turing is a result of several years of engineering effort in its development, and it features new RT cores. These cores play a significant role in accelerating ray tracing. The new Tensor Cores are also for AI inferencing and for the first time, these make real-time ray tracing a reality.

The new turing is wonderful for today’s applications, but it will be utterly awesome at tomorrow’s apps. More than two dozen key ISVs provide the software that supports the new silicon. NVIDIA has also enabled its RTX platform for development with new AI to help developers to take advantage of Turing’s capabilities.

The company also offers ray-tracing as well as simulation SDKs that help in speeding Turing’s capabilities to perform key graphics applications. The RTX platform also helps to address millions of artists, designers, and scientists.

Mr. Jensen Huang also said that NVIDIA would be open sourcing its Material Definition Language Software development kit. He also pointed out that they have a new software kit for computer graphics that merge ray tracing and rastering, computing and AI.

Ray Tracing And Real-Time

Ray tracing is a component of visual computer graphics with a history of decades of development.  It is a result of great interest to simulate the world around us, and the event attracted some of the brightest minds in the world for decades.

Turing uses ray-tracing processors also called RT cores. These help in accelerating the computation of how sound and light travel in 3D environments. Turing helps to stimulate real-time ray tracing applications by above 25x compared to the previous Pascal generation.

Turing can also be used for final-frame rendering in the film effects and works at more than 30x the speed of different CPUs. Huang demonstrated Turing’s capability through an Epic Games’s wonderful Star Wars-themed Reflections, a ray tracing demo.

At first, the demo ran on DGX station with four Volta GPUs, but it later ran on a single Turing GPU. According to Huang, this is the first ray tracing GPU across the whole globe. The other important aspect includes Turing’s Tensor Cores, the processors that help in accelerating in-depth training and inferencing.

Turing’s architecture can offer about 500 trillion tensor operations per second which help to power the AI-enhanced features. For instance, some of the highlights include denoising, video retiming as well as resolution scaling. These also come together with the NVIDIA NGX software kit.

AI is vital at some point since it helps you to figure out the missing dots and how you should fill them in. It also enables us to complete the frame at a faster rate than the usual process. The new deep learning technology stack enables developers to enhance graphics, integrate acceleration, photo imaging as well as video processing.

These are integrated into applications that have pre-trained networks. Deep learning provides the most potent method of incorporating these applications. The improved speed also helps to improve the visual and graphics processing on your CPU.

Creating computer graphics real time with Turing

Turing’s Rasterization

Turing also operates through rasterization, the foundation of interactive graphics. It is six times faster than Pascal according to Huang. Other technologies like texture space shading, variable-rate shading land multi-view rendering also provide effective interaction with large models and improved VR experiences.

Visual effects have been progressing through the use of Cornell Box, a 3D internal box which displays different objects. Turing also uses ray tracing to provide complex results such as diffused reflection to refractions as well as to caustics and global illumination. These come with handsome photorealism.

The Turing GPU generates stunning photo reels that however looks filmed at first. The Turing GPU develops these using Epic Games- Unreal Engine. NVIDIA RTX is for the first time making it possible to bring both accelerated workflows and acceleration to the market.

There are many tools upon which creators can choose from if they want to tackle projects of this magnitude. These are in addition to Turing’s three most powerful graphics cards that include Quadro RTX 5000, Quadro RTX 6000, and Quadro RTX 8000 and their prices vary.

Huang also illustrated the prowess of the Turing application through a show of robotic assistants. These place glossy-white space-age armor on a lone figure and interestingly, each piece finds its place with just a click. These robotic assistants use artificial intelligence, and they are amazing in the way they handle things.

The unsupervised robots can also dance to the music of the late 1970’s “Boogie Shoes” performed by KC and the Sunshine Band. The performance highlights the power of Turing application in the graphic presentation of videos. The new technology also involves real-time tracking that allows the user to perform interactive graphics.

The Quadro RTX GPU enables you to enhance computer graphics, video processing as well as photo imaging. The technology allows you to integrate these applications with pre-trained networks. You can also use artificial intelligence to perform different tasks related to graphics processing.

Turing is also capable of bringing ray tracing into real-time by attempting to simulate the world around us. The history of computer graphics has been evolving over the past decades and turing is the latest development.
